In addition to conserving resources and reducing costs, Swissfeel also considers employee development an integral part of holistic sustainability. The Swiss manufacturer of hotel beds places a strong emphasis on fostering technical talent. “True sustainability is undoubtedly one of the most pressing challenges in the hospitality industry today. However, when it comes to the shortage of skilled workers, it’s not just the hospitality sector that is affected; the issue is equally prevalent in the supply chain periphery,” says Philipp Hangartner, CEO of SWISSFEEL AG.
SWISSFEEL has been actively promoting young talent across industries for several years. In a new project, the Swiss company is now combining personnel development, cost reduction, and sustainability. Currently, a group of young technicians is being given the opportunity to gain insights into sustainable mattress washing processes. These aspiring state-certified technicians are working in SWISSFEEL’s research and development department, located in Burgdorf, near Hanover, to develop solutions for optimizing water and energy use in mattress washing.
Since long-term product use is a key aspect of sustainability, SWISSFEEL emphasizes offering its hotel clients (overnight guests) a sustainable complete solution, including free mattress disposal and recycling.
SWISSFEEL’s patented mattress washing system was designed with energy efficiency in mind. Operating pneumatically, it uses minimal energy compared to traditional washing and spinning machines. As part of its ecological commitment, the family-owned company is also focusing on water treatment. A new water cycle system utilizing solar energy is being developed, which will further enhance resource and energy conservation.
“SWISSFEEL’s philosophy is not only to spark interest in sustainability solutions but also to foster talent and raise awareness of these issues in general. We see this as a societal responsibility,” adds Kai Rittmeier, SWISSFEEL’s lead engineer. Accordingly, SWISSFEEL has been supporting students, apprentices, and projects from universities and technical schools on these topics for several years. Recently, the SWISSFEEL Sustainability Award was introduced in collaboration with the German Hotel Academy (DHA) and the GreenSign sustainability seal for the hospitality industry, aiming to support young talent in the hospitality sector.
Lukas Kittelmann, a participant in SWISSFEEL’s project to reduce costs through sustainable technologies, states: “Practical opportunities like these are incredibly valuable for our professional development. They allow us to explore new industries, such as hospitality, with all its possibilities and needs. We deeply appreciate SWISSFEEL’s commitment, as few companies invest so intensively in training and promoting young talent. Yet, the industry urgently needs specialized professionals to technically realize the existing sustainability potential.”
SWISSFEEL provides ecologically sustainable solutions for the hospitality sector. By washing SWISSFEEL mattresses, the lifespan of conventional mattresses is extended, eliminating the production costs for at least two additional mattresses. For comparison, in terms of environmental and cost considerations, the energy used to manufacture one conventional mattress could be used to wash up to 100 SWISSFEEL mattresses. Washable mattresses thus contribute significantly to cost savings and environmental relief. However, SWISSFEEL is not stopping there and plans to further optimize the washing process to conserve water and energy even more effectively.
