Under the title “Washable mattresses in hotels? Resort Hof Weissbad leads the way”, eingecheckt.de published a detailed article by Michael Külbel on 19 October 2026. It asks why the mattress has become a throwaway product in hotels – and how things can be done differently. It is based on a written interview with Swissfeel owner Philipp Hangartner, information from the hotel and the author’s own research.

In 2014, Resort Hof Weissbad in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden equipped a total of 136 beds with Swissfeel’s fully washable mattresses. Guests also sleep on them in the Lodge, which opened in 2018. Core and cover are washed in a special facility, dried and put back into use. Swissfeel uses a mineral foam produced in Switzerland for this purpose.

The oldest mattresses have now been in use for twelve years. Under suitable conditions, Swissfeel says a service life of up to 20 years is possible. According to the hotel, the resort has saved more than CHF 200,000 since 2014.

The life-cycle assessment is also discussed: a 2023 study by Carbotech AG puts the saving at up to 77 percent fewer CO₂ equivalents than an innerspring mattress in the defined comparison scenario – 15 years of use with two cleanings versus replacement after five years. This is a scenario value, not a measurement taken in a specific hotel.

Finally, the article asks whether the solution is also open to small hotels. Philipp Hangartner sees no minimum size. In September 2026, Resort Hof Weissbad also received the Green Sleeping Award of HSMA Deutschland, which Swissfeel supports – the article states this transparently.
