Sleep is key: Successful private hotels prioritize quality over compromise when it comes to hotel beds

28.11.2025

The Hof Weissbad resort demonstrates how consistently implemented sleep quality can be achieved through complete washability, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, thereby ensuring long-term guest loyalty.

Sleep comfort is more than just an amenity – it is a strategic competitive advantage. The Hof Weissbad resort has an average occupancy rate of 90% and 40,000 overnight stays per year. The 4-star superior resort in the Appenzell region also consistently relies on washable mattresses from Swissfeel. More than ten years ago, this hotel was one of the first to put its trust in the sleeping comfort offered by the owner-managed Swiss company in order to ensure maximum reliability for the most important piece of equipment in the hotel industry. “We are convinced that hoteliers who invest in healthy, clean, and durable sleep today are investing in tomorrow's success,” says Philipp Hangartner, owner of Swissfeel.

Since their purchase, the Swissfeel mattresses have been washed several times in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. This confirms the decision made by the hotel management at the time: instead of purchasing new mattresses after five to six years, as is customary and even recommended elsewhere, the Hof Weissbad has since saved considerable amounts of money. The washing cycles have significantly extended the life of the mattresses and restored them to like-new condition after each wash.

For Sanna Kehl, head of housekeeping, the washable mattresses are a complete success: “The mattresses are much more hygienic than conventional models and are easy to handle.”

Guests also confirm this experience. “They praise the high level of sleeping comfort offered by the sustainable, high-quality foam, as the mattress adapts perfectly to the body.” Feedback like this shows that luxurious sleeping comfort is not only noticed, but also appreciated. Director Elias Leu adds: "The reactions from guests are nothing but positive. The system proves itself in every respect—ecologically, hygienically, and economically." For him, it is clear that the bed—often underestimated—is at the heart of the guest experience. Many hotels focus on design, lobby, or gastronomy, but at Hof Weissbad, the emphasis is deliberately placed on the essentials: restful, high-quality sleep.

Investing in Swissfeel not only ensures a high level of comfort, but also has a positive effect in terms of sustainability. The SWISSFEEL 2-CYCLE concept saves almost 80% CO₂ because new mattresses are needed less frequently and used models are taken back and recycled at the end of their life cycle.

This dual cycle – laundry service plus recycling – was recently highlighted by the Handelsblatt newspaper as a real-life model for the circular hotel industry.

For private hotels that want to stand out from the crowd and inspire guests in the long term, this strategy makes a clear statement: quality in bed, responsibility towards the environment and resources, and economic foresight at the same time.
